Oct 30, 2008 - I agree, ut not qith the terminology. I think that meditation and use of psychedelics and marijuana create altered states (compared to 'normal' egoic consciosuness). These altered and meditative states are far less compressed and closed than the ego. Ego death is not the thing to do, because that can actually be harmful. Instead, I'd prefer to transcend and imclude the ego so that it is happy and it is not a danger to me and everyone and it is not getting special treatent at the same time.

Also, the user IntegralNaked has a 17 minute video called Mahamudra meditation with the tongue touching the roof of the mouth and all that. I did it and it was not bad at all, especially the screaming pah! pah! pah!, as to train to sustain awareness. Very effective. I can't begin to comprehend further, without training in Mahamudra more, though. Perhaps he's doing his best to avoid confusion among the audience.

Jun 12, 2008 - Very powerful teachings Patrick. You're an excellent teacher. I attended the 1986 Vajradhatu seminary with both you and Ken Wilber.I'm just a bit uncomfortable that you're presenting these sacred teachings in such a public medium as Youtube. These teachings are a part of the Kagyu lineage and meant as an ear whispered transmission from guru to student depending on the preparedness and the trust of both parties. Just laying it out there in such a public forum opens it up to misunderstanding.

This second capacity is also known as "wisdom".

Patrick Sweeney continues his beautiful discussion of nondual consciousness, the nameless, effortless, self-liberating quality of awareness in which all distinctions between self and other, this and that, inside and outside fall away completely, leaving only the brilliant clarity of this very Moment, exactly as it is. Although this "Ordinary Mind" is and always has been the ever-present condition of consciousness, the separate self somehow rarely seems to notice that which it always already is—in fact, it is fair to say that the majority of our actions and intentions as human beings are in avoidance of this simple recognition, with all its ego-shattering implications. However, we have all experienced this radical One Taste many times in the course of our lives, if even for the briefest of moments. Patrick mentions accidents, orgasms, and death as typical moments of spontaneous and profound realization, but these experiences tend to occur whenever the normal continuity of life becomes suddenly disrupted—during which people tend to report radically altered states of experience, including a sense of time dilation, an overwhelming feeling of peace or oneness with the world, and everything simply becomes much more vivid, vibrant, and present. Unfortunately, it can be all too easy to miss these experiences without a stable contemplative practice, which helps train our capacity to be persistently aware of ourselves and our environments, making it much easier to recognize our own Original Face whenever it chooses to reveal itself.
